The National Association of Ondo State Students has condemned the recurring killings of students at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, calling for urgent intervention from the government and security agencies.
In a statement co-signed on Saturday by its National President, Alade Tosin, and General Secretary, Agbeni Oluwatobi, the association described the spate of violence as outright attacks on the academic stability, mental wellbeing, and future of students in the university community.
PUNCH Online had earlier reported that the university witnessed protests on Saturday as students decried what they described as targeted killings by indigenes of Akungba town.
One of the victims, identified as Joy Adeyemi from the Department of Human Kinetics, was reportedly killed on Tuesday by her boyfriend, who has since fled.
Her death came barely three weeks after the abduction and murder of two students, Andrel Okah and John Abba, whose suspected killers were arrested, although the alleged mastermind reportedly died in police custody.
NAOSS condemned the killings, urging authorities not to sweep the matter under the carpet.
“These are not mere crimes, they are cold-blooded atrocities that must not be ignored.
“The blood of our students cries out for justice, and we shall not be silent,” the statement read.
The association demanded the following steps from authorities:
“Identify and prosecute all perpetrators involved in these heinous killings.
“Strengthen the security architecture within and around the university environment
“Engage the host community leadership on the need to promote peaceful coexistence and protect students as part of their own community,” NAOSS stated.
The student body called on the Ondo State Government, security agencies, traditional rulers, and the management of AAUA to take decisive action, while urging students to remain calm and law-abiding.
“Let it be known that NAOSS Global will continue to champion the welfare, safety, and rights of all Ondo State students.
“We will not relent until every student’s life is treated with the dignity and protection it deserves,” the statement added.
