South Sudan President Salva Kiir has dissolved the transitional government, hours after signing amendments to election laws aimed at clearing hurdles to long-delayed elections.

The amended law removes requirements for a permanent constitution and national census before voting can take place.

It also allows the incumbent executive leadership to remain in office with full constitutional powers until a newly elected president takes office.

The move comes ahead of planned December elections, although voter registration has yet to begin.
